Who makes the main brands.

Brivais is made by Brīvais Vilnis, a fish processor at Salacgrīva in northern Latvia that began in 1949 as a fishermen's collective farm. It is one of the owners of the Riga sprats trademark, and its Riga sprats are smoked Baltic sprat in rapeseed oil.

Graal, of Wejherowo in Poland, started as a trading company in 1989 and describes itself as one of the largest producers of fish products in Poland. In 2024 it became part of Lisner, the Poznań fish company.

King Oscar began as the Stavanger Canning Company. It has carried the name and portrait of King Oscar II since 1902 and has belonged to Thai Union Group since 2014.

Formats and case sizes.

Brivais packs its 240g tins twenty-four to a case and its 160g tins thirty-six or forty. The Polish tins from Graal, Lisner, Evra and King Oscar run from 115g to 300g, in cases of twelve to twenty-four. Losos packs most of its tins forty-eight or fifty to a case, and Unica jack mackerel is a 425g tin, twenty-four to a case.

Most snack bags weigh 20g to 52g and come in cases of twenty to fifty. Afroase packs are 50g or 100g, ten or twenty to a case. Northern Fish comes as a 3kg box or as 500g packs in twenties. Every line is listed as ambient.

What to range first.

An Eastern European shop starts with Riga sprats in oil, sprats in tomato sauce, one mackerel and one herring, then adds the snack bags, which hang with the crisps and nuts or beside the beer fridge. An African grocer starts with Afroase crayfish and smoked catfish. An Asian grocer starts with Eagle Coin fried dace and Smiling Fish mackerel.

Common questions.

What are Riga sprats?

Smoked Baltic sprats packed in oil. Brīvais Vilnis, the Latvian company behind Brivais, is one of the owners of the Riga sprats trademark.

Is everything in this section in a tin?

No. The fish snacks, the Afroase dried fish, the Northern Fish salted fish and the bonito flakes are dry packs. They are filed here because, like the tins, they are listed as ambient.

Where are the chilled herring and fish salads?

In Chilled fish & caviar. Lisner's chilled lines are listed there; only its tins are in this section.
