The range by origin.

Most of the category is imported, and each origin has its own shopper.

  • South African: Kingsley, Sparletta, Stoney ginger beer, Bashews, Switch, Fitch & Leedes mixers, Appletiser and Bos iced tea. Cream soda, Iron Brew and granadilla are the flavours to know.
  • Polish and Eastern European: Tymbark, Hellena, Oshee and Frugo from Poland, Lipton and Nestea iced tea, Frutti Fresh from Romania, Kofola from Czechia, and kvass.

The largest brands.

Kingsley has more lines here than any other brand. Kingsley Beverages was founded in 2007 and has an office in Johannesburg. Its range runs from cola and cream soda to Iron Brew, ginger ale, tonic and fruit flavours, in 300ml, 330ml and 500ml and in 2-litre bottles.

Tymbark belongs to Maspex, a food group based in Wadowice, Poland. Its fruit drinks, among them Apple-Mint, Apple-Peach and Orange-Peach, come in 200ml, 250ml and 330ml.

Frutti Fresh is a Romanian carbonated fruit drink from European Drinks International of Oradea. It comes in 330ml cans, 500ml and 2 litres, in orange, pear, grapefruit, red grape and Tutti Frutti.

Coca-Cola and Fanta are stocked in their Irish-market packs. Fanta flavours from Poland, Romania and South Africa sit beside them.

Formats and case sizes.

Single serves are 330ml and 500ml, in cases of 24, with some 500ml lines in cases of 12. Many South African lines are 300ml, and American imports are 355ml, packed as two trays of twelve. Fitch & Leedes mixers come in 200ml cans.

Take-home bottles are 1.5 litres and 2 litres, six to a case.

Nearly every line is ambient. The exception is a small group of chilled milk drinks, which need fridge space from the moment they are delivered.

What to range first.

Begin with the Irish-market Coca-Cola, Fanta and Sprite lines in 330ml and 500ml. A shop that sells for the home adds 2-litre bottles.

Then add the drinks your shoppers ask for by name. For South African customers that means Kingsley or Sparletta cream soda and Iron Brew, and Stoney ginger beer. For Polish and Eastern European customers it means Tymbark, Hellena lemonade and orangeade, Lipton or Nestea iced tea in 1.5 litres, and kvass.

American Dr Pepper and Fanta flavours, Milkis and Ramune are impulse lines. Try a few facings in the drinks fridge before giving them a shelf.

Deposits: what a retailer must know.

Soft drinks in cans and PET plastic bottles from 150ml to 3 litres come under Ireland's Deposit Return Scheme: the deposit is 15c on a container of up to and including 500ml and 25c on a larger one. A retailer may sell an in-scope drink only if it is registered with Re-turn and carries the Re-turn logo. Glass bottles, cartons, and milk and other dairy-based drinks are outside the scheme; the Deposit Return Scheme guide sets out what a shop has to do. Last reviewed 5 October 2026.
