What is in the range.

The frozen range is split into seven sections. Ice cream and breads are the two largest.

  • Ice cream & frozen desserts: Limo ice cream from Ukraine, Little Moons mochi ice cream, Kulfi Ice, Bamboo Tree ice bars and whole cakes.
  • Frozen paratha, naan & breads: Ashoka parathas, kulcha and naan, Shana and Deep naan, Baltic rye loaves from Vilniaus Duona and Eestipagar, and Moldovan pies.
  • Frozen seafood: Asian Choice shrimp, squid, crab and tilapia, Fisherman's Choice surimi and masago, and Dodo fish balls.
  • Frozen vegetables & fruit: Hortex vegetables, soup mixes and fruit, Asian Choice edamame, cassava, taro and lemongrass, and Shana okra.
  • Frozen dumplings & dim sum: Ajinomoto and Bibigo gyoza, Synear dumplings and steamed buns, Anita dumplings from Poland and Ukrainka vareniki.
  • Samosas, spring rolls & snacks: Ashoka, Shana and Humza samosas, Deep pakora, spring rolls, and glutinous rice balls from Synear and Chinatown.
  • Frozen ready meals & sushi: a small section of frozen noodles, takoyaki and Ashoka vada pav.

The range by cuisine.

Few shops need all seven sections. The range comes from four groups of suppliers, and each has its own shopper.

  • Polish and Eastern European, the largest group: ice cream from Ukraine, Lithuania and Latvia, Baltic rye bread, Hortex vegetables, Anita dumplings and Ukrainka vareniki.
  • South Asian: Ashoka breads and samosas from India, Shana breads and vegetables, Deep naan and pakora, Mehek paratha and Kulfi Ice.
  • Chinese and South-East Asian: Synear from China, Chinatown and Dodo from Singapore, and Asian Choice seafood and vegetables from Vietnam and China.
  • Korean and Japanese: Bibigo gyoza, mandu and steamed dumplings, Wang dumplings and Ajinomoto gyoza.

The largest brands.

Asian Choice has more lines here than any other brand. It is a frozen label whose owner describes a range running from vegetables to fish and seafood, and names edamame, tilapia, black tiger shrimp and squid as its bestsellers.

Ashoka is the Indian brand of ADF Foods, which says the brand was established in 1988. ADF's plant at Nadiad, in Gujarat, makes its frozen foods, among them samosas, snacks and parathas.

Little Moons is mochi ice cream from a London company: balls of gelato ice cream wrapped in a soft rice flour dough.

Synear Food Co. makes dumplings, glutinous rice balls and steamed buns, and says it is one of the largest companies in China's quick-frozen food industry.

Hortex frozen vegetables, fruit and ready meals are produced and packed at one plant in Skierniewice, Poland. Limo is made by the Lviv Refrigeration Plant in Ukraine, which has made ice cream since 1965.

Bibigo is the Korean food brand of CJ CheilJedang, and says some of its dumplings are produced in Europe and others in Korea. Dodo is produced in Singapore by Thong Siek Global, a business that began in 1976.

Formats and case sizes.

Seafood and edamame come mostly as ten 1kg bags to a case, with 500g bags packed in twenties. Dodo fish balls are 200g packs, thirty to a case.

Breads, dumplings and vegetables are retail packs of 300g to 500g, usually twelve to a case. Hortex vegetables are mostly 450g bags, fourteen to a case. Ashoka breads also come in family packs of twelve to fifteen pieces, and most bread, dumpling and samosa titles give the piece count.

Ice cream is sold as single sticks, cups and cones, mostly thirty or forty to a case, as multipacks, and in tubs. Kulfi Ice 1 litre tubs are eight to a case.

What a retailer must know.

Frozen lines travel on their own delivery route, separate from ambient and chilled orders.

The storage type is shown on every line. Check it before you order: a small number of lines in this category, most of them in the ice cream section, are recorded as chilled and not frozen.

What to range first.

Start with the freezer space you have and the shoppers you already serve.

A South Asian shop starts with Ashoka parathas, naan and Punjabi samosas, then adds Shana okra and Kulfi Ice. An Asian grocer starts with gyoza and Synear dumplings, Asian Choice shrimp and edamame, and Dodo fish balls. A Polish or Eastern European shop starts with dumplings and vareniki, rye bread, Hortex vegetables and plombir ice cream.

Takeaways and restaurants buy from the 1kg bags of Asian Choice shrimp, squid and edamame. A convenience store with one freezer can begin with Little Moons and a few single ice creams.
