What is in the range.
The range has three sections.
- Rice: basmati from India Gate, Tilda, Laila, Akash and Mehek; Thai jasmine and glutinous rice from Royal Thai Rice, Sawat-D and Smart Chef; Royal Orient sushi rice; and Romanian and Polish retail rice from Scotti, Deroni, Kupiec and Melvit.
- Grains & cereals: buckwheat, semolina, pearl barley, millet, couscous and bulgur, mostly from Melvit, Kupiec, Zhitniza and Fasma.
- Lentils, beans & pulses: Shan and TRS dals, Melvit lentils, split peas and white beans, California Garden fava beans and chickpeas, and Imbo sugar beans and samp.
The range by cuisine.
India is the largest origin, followed by Poland and Thailand. Four groups of shoppers buy from this range, and each wants different lines.
- South Asian: basmati as plain, extra long, golden sella and broken grain, then sona masoori, ponni and idli rice, and chana, masoor, moong, toor and urid dal.
- Thai, Chinese, Japanese and Korean: jasmine rice, whole and broken, glutinous rice, black, red and brown cargo rice, sushi rice, and Hetbahn cooked rice from South Korea.
- Polish and Eastern European: roasted and white buckwheat, semolina, pearl barley, millet, split peas and white beans, with round-grain and parboiled rice. Scotti, Deroni and Natura pack Romanian rice for sarmale and pilaf.
- South African: sugar beans, samp and beans and stampkoring from Imbo, Lion and Bushveld, and Iwisa maize rice.
Who makes the main brands.
India Gate is the basmati brand of KRBL, an Indian rice company that dates itself from 1889 and has its registered office in Delhi.
Tilda was founded in 1970 and says it was the first brand to bring basmati rice to the Western world. It has been part of Ebro Foods since 2019.
Melvit has its office and plant at Kruki in Poland, and says it is the biggest producer of groats and cereals in the country.
Bag weights and case sizes.
Rice sells by bag weight. The 20kg bag is the kitchen and takeaway size and is sold singly. The 10kg bag is sold singly too. The 5kg bag comes on its own or four to a case, and Thai jasmine and glutinous rice also come as four 4.5kg bags. The retail size is the 1kg bag, in cases of six, ten, twelve or twenty, with Romanian rice in cases of ten 900g packs.
Most grains come in 400g, 500g, 800g, 900g and 1kg packs, six to sixteen to a case. Dals and dried beans are mostly 500g bags, ten or twenty-four to a case, with Polish lentils and beans in 400g packs.
Rice, grains and pulses are all supplied ambient. Nothing in the three sections carries a Deposit Return Scheme deposit.
What to range first.
Start with the rice your shoppers cook every day, in the bag they are used to carrying home.
A South Asian grocer starts with one basmati brand, India Gate or Tilda, in 5kg and 10kg bags, adds a golden sella and a sona masoori, then Shan chana, masoor and moong dal. A takeaway or restaurant buys the same basmati in 20kg bags.
An Asian grocer starts with Royal Thai Rice jasmine in 1kg and 20kg bags, then glutinous rice and Royal Orient sushi rice.
A Polish or Eastern European shop starts with buckwheat, semolina and pearl barley from Melvit or Kupiec, then round-grain rice and split peas. A South African fixture starts with Imbo sugar beans and samp and beans.
A convenience store needs little more than one basmati and one jasmine rice in 1kg bags.
